Cultivate the Contemplative Garden of You

look within photo of tania marieIf peace is what you seek, this comes from cultivating inner harmony from a strong core and centered self, which will ultimately reduce stress and anxiety, as well as increase inner joy. It shifts your perspective on life and about anyone you experience along the journey, and ultimately affects the way you choose to either react or respond. It helps you be in the stillness of presence to draw from your core source and be conscious of the subtleties that nudge you to their attention.

Your garden within consists of your soul-self where your inner wisdom, peace and source of pure, limitless, unconditional love and compassion reside. It is here that you find all that is nurturing and supportive to guide you on your journey, abundantly equipped with the replenishment of all you will ever need.

It is pointless to search the whole world for the wonderful things you desire, as we all, at some point, discover there never being need to search – only the need for courage to look within to behold the treasure. If we find something or someone affecting our peace of mind and inner harmony, that is the moment we have stopped being in the power of our hearts and took a brief side-step from our core source into the ego dance, which can only sway from black to white – unable to be in that integrative gray.

meditating at the stargate in peruYour conscious and unconscious thoughts and emotions fuel the direction and quality of your daily life and inner harmony. It is invaluable to keep vigil to the fire in your heart. Cycles will come and go and darkness is not only something you can learn to navigate as an integral part of the presence of light, but is also never permanent. There is meaning and importance in the balance and natural harmony you have available at all moments simply by being the totality of you.

There is also importance in asking the questions that will provide opportunity to go deeper and expand the ways in which you realize your connection to the world and every experience around you. So when something throws you off and you find yourself over-stimulated in one way or another, or not standing solidly in your heart, these are the times to mirror the example of nature around us. See how nature is willing to soften, flow, rest, shift, blend, sprout, thaw, shed…to allow for new growth.

Life has an ebb and flow to it – embrace this knowing that everything is fleeting.

bali lotusYou are the gardener of your own life and what you choose to mindfully plant, nurture, and cultivate from the rich soil of your heart, will reflect the pattern of growth you choose and the experiences you have. The world is a mirror to your inner landscape, and vice versa, so when you open your awareness to all that is unfolding, you begin to understand how true alchemy works. Every part of the journey is important (no matter how small or unseen the internal shifts are) and they ARE worth your time and WILL grow into new blossoms that convey the contemplative cultivation you have given to them.

May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us. ~Saint Terese of Liseaux

When last visited 12 years ago, Jenny Yemaya had a deeply moving experience and recollection of Atlantis and its destruction. It is believed that the power crystal of Atlantis is beneath the waves in this area. We experienced all equipment breaking down on the boat and the compass spinning randomly. It is an energy field of immense proportions where we will meditate and work with the new waves of information and consciousness being brought forth to assist our transition as we head through 2013 and our higher vibratory selves.

Do You Wear a Spiritual Disguise? – Losing the Mask & Finding Your Truth

Truth allows you to live with integrity. Everything you do and say shows the world who you really are. Let it be the Truth. ~Oprah Winfrey

The Truth needs no rehearsal. ~ Barbara Kingsolver

It can be easy at times to think of ourselves as two entirely different individuals – our old and our new self. This becomes easier to do, the more we journey along our spiritual path. This “new” self feels to us to be much more enlightened, and in many cases it is, however, sometimes even the spiritually evolved version of ourselves can still be wearing a mask that it hides behind – a spiritual disguise.

Energetic themes seem to flow in cycles and the last couple of weeks have made poignant a recurring one that feels of importance to share on. I have been picking up on the themes of integrity, authenticity, truth, and how that interrelates with the purity, innocence, and playfulness of our inner child – all leading back to that “return to natural harmony within and without” and “walking the walk.”

These aren’t just themes of importance for people who are just beginning to become more aware and conscious of things, or even for people who are operating with a majority of unconsciousness, but also for all of us who are already on a path of conscious evolution for quite some time. This feels to be coming through in order to support us in how we can take things to another experience of depth that will have profound effects.

What comes hand-in-hand with this theme is not just about speaking truth to others, but in being completely honest with ourselves – and this can be done with humor and gentleness, so as to make the process one of fun rather than punishment.

I juggled with how I wanted to share on these topics, finding there was a lot wanting to come through about them, but in the end had been guided, rather, to share a couple of specific, brief writings from others I was led to that I felt would provide not only insightful perspective, but in one case, some humor – something I feel to be of extra importance these days in approaching ourselves and our experiences.

The topics within these themes that I keep feeling strongly abound are:

  • Using spirituality to avoid things like our shadow aspects, fears, and pains – something author and psychotherapist Robert Augustus Masters calls “spiritual bypassing”
  • How we lose ourselves behind “spiritual fluff” or are over-dosing on positivity without integrative grounding, as a means of avoiding and repressing our inner truth and, ultimately, our inclusive Divinity being revealed
  • How we convince ourselves we are beyond something and yet perhaps all we have done was run the other way or are just regurgitating what we “think” we should say or do spiritually, but without having fulling embodied the essence of what that truly means

I really resonate with what Masters shares in this particular excerpt from his book, Spiritual Bypassing: When Spirituality Disconnects Us from What Really Matters:

“True spirituality is not a high, not a rush, not an altered state. It has been fine to romance it for a while, but our times call for something far more real, grounded, and responsible; something radically alive and naturally integral; something that shakes us to our very core until we stop treating spiritual deepening as something to dabble in here and there. Authentic spirituality is not some little flicker or buzz of knowingness, not a psychedelic blast-through or a mellow hanging-out on some exalted plane of consciousness, not a bubble of immunity, but a vast fire of liberation, an exquisitely fitting crucible and sanctuary, providing both heat and light for the healing and awakening we need. Most of the time when we’re immersed in spiritual bypassing, we like the light but not the heat. And when we’re caught up in the grosser forms of spiritual bypassing, we’d usually much rather theorize about the frontiers of consciousness than actually go there, suppressing the fire rather than breathing it even more alive, espousing the ideal of unconditional love but not permitting love to show up in its more challenging, personal dimensions. To do so would be too hot, too scary, and too out-of-control, bringing things to the surface that we have long disowned or suppressed. But if we really want the light, we cannot afford to flee the heat. As Victor Frankl said, “What gives light must endure burning.” And being with the fire’s heat doesn’t just mean sitting with the difficult stuff in meditation, but also going into it, trekking to its core, facing and entering and getting intimate with whatever is there, however scary or traumatic or sad or raw.”

I then came across a post by the light-hearted and humanistic Aalif Surti who shares, as he puts it, “a colorful mandala of spirituality, creativity and humor” through his blog. In his post, The Buddha Mask (And Other Spiritual Facades), he explores masks we wear as protection, elimination, and escapism, but as he says, “And while masks appear to prevent Life from hurting us, sadly they also prevent us from truly experiencing Life – except through narrow eyeholes.”

I hope you enjoy his humorous take on how even therapists, healers, and seekers put on a spiritual display and a way we can playfully take our power back in the realization of this.

Here is Aalif Surti’s post, which you can see also at the link above:

As seekers, we may believe we have become aware now and dropped our false personas, but sometimes we have only traded it in for a new mask – a spiritual persona. In a hilarious group session a few months ago, my mentor GD helped us dissect and laugh at the masks we may wear as seekers, healers and therapists. Here’s my light-hearted summation of the key spiritual ‘displays’:

The Buddha Mask: You’ve seen the statue, now meet the person. Unaffected by others, far removed from worldly emotions, this mask says: You can’t touch me… I am beyond it all. Behind it hides sensitivity, fear and confusion. During my early Vipassana days, some people called me ‘aloof’ instead of ‘aalif’!

The Positivity Mask: Those who practice affirmations and positive thinking sometimes feel compelled to uphold an abnormally high frequency of ecstasy. Ask them how they are, and an automated voice reply comes: “AMAZING! Life is full of miracles!!” But when it is a mask, their eyes, their energy, and their aura tell a different story.

The ‘Superior-Seeker’ Mask: They enter a room, and the whole room suddenly feels unworthy. They carry a subtle air of superiority. They are on the high road to heaven and they smile beatifically upon all the creepy crawlies with an air of cultivated compassion. Proving superiority all the time is a dead giveaway for a sense of inferiority inside.

The Messiah Mask: They are out to change the world – one flailing, resisting human at a time. These are the givers of support and nurturance and advice… whether anyone asks for it or not! But give they must, because they need to avoid the confusion and emptiness within. A beautiful, socially approved mask and hence more difficult to let go of…

The Pundit Mask: References obscure texts and uses big Sanskrit words. Will disrupt a conversation to quote a 16th century Indian mystic or a little-known modern non-dual teacher. It’s a mask when they talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.

The Lost-in-Space Mask: They find a way to bring Pleiadians, Archangels and Entities into every normal conversation. They would interrupt you to whisper conspiratorially that there’s a 6th dimensional entity behind you right now! They take name-dropping to a whole new dimension.

While the masks may be twisted and rigid, the people underneath these masks are not foolish or nasty. They are you and me, GD said, innocently trying to cover up a wound of not-being-enough by putting on a show. Masks are a way of saying ‘I am special’ but ironically, each mask ends up proving the opposite: each mask reveals a lack of self-love and self-acceptance-as-I-am.

All of us play a variety of roles in life. When we are conscious of the role playing, there is no problem. Masks are problematic because they are compulsive and unconscious, and the behavior comes from ego not insight.

And whenever the ego creates a mask, it has to suppress the opposite in oneself – a compulsive giver finds it hard to ask for help; the intellectual ceases to listen and ask questions; Buddha-face cannot show vulnerability or intimacy when needed.

When someone asked GD at the end of the workshop how she could prevent the mask from coming back on later, GD replied, “Make a joke of it, phone us all up and say: ‘Hey look, my mask is back!’ The moment you become aware, it loses its power. And once you make it a joke, it disappears.”

And in the absence of masks, he reminded us, we can become like the beautiful little children we all are inside – who can be all of the above when required – and their exact opposite when required – without holding onto any particular face.

Celtic Butterfly and Tree of Life Sacred Tattoo Design

Celtic Butterfly & Tree of Life Sacred Tattoo DesignAs mentioned, I’ve been in flowing with the beautiful Celtic energy this week in the most recent wave of new sacred tattoo designs. I had a lot of fun working with this current piece and the essences of things my clients wanted to see embodied in this design.

Each piece I design is so unique because they embody the energy of each individual soul and so they take me on these limitless journeys that not only creatively challenge me to draw from the limitless source of the Universe, but beautifully fill me with the honor of experiencing such brilliant lights along the way.

This sacred design combines the symbolism of Butterfly medicine, the Tree of Life, Spiral and Heart energy, and the Trinity Knot. Interestingly, this pieces is ALSO going on my client’s inner left forearm. Quite the synchronicities flowing energetically with these!

The image that first came to me in right away was a butterfly for this client. Butterfly medicine symbolizes transformation, celebration, transition, lightness, soul, time, grace, elegance, freedom, joy and bliss, miracles, flexibility, cycles of life, creativity, gentleness, preciousness of life, as well as the medicine the ability and clarity of mind needed before self-transformation.

I felt to create a more abstract butterfly, as is mirroring of her unique style, with beautifully Celtic-inspired wing designs that held symbolism in them as well. I included Spiral and Trinity Knot designs that it unveils with spreaded wings. A Spiral, signifying growth, spins into a Trinity Knot, symbol of eternity – therefore symbolizing a spirit journeying into the infinite.

This Butterfly also represents the more feminine aspects with her gracefulness and curved wings and design, and that connection with understanding both the strength and fragility simultaneously in life.

I set it off with a stylized Tree of Life that blends the Spiral energy throughout and merges the top Spirals into Hearts. The Tree of Life captures the essence of Celtic belief in the interconnectedness of all things – earth and sky, plants, animals and all beings – in the cycle of life. This Tree of Life depicts a tree, leaves opening in the new Spiral cycles of life into eternal journeys that lead to abundant of heart expansion in the process. The trees roots grounding in the earth and the limbs reaching in different directions of where the path will lead on the continuous journey of enlightened awareness.

There is a vulnerability of Heart (hence the addition of the Spirals creating Hearts at top – also to represent the deepening and opening of my client’s own heart to embrace unconditional love and compassion for self and others always through the journey) and strength present. There is also a focused energy in creating the very clear and asymmetrical design with symbols that have both Triangular points and Circular energy (which we learned in the last Celtic design post are both symbols that represent clarity). The Circle symbolizing also your self-awareness within the construct of the universe and cosmic consciousness and of course, eternity. The Trianglular shapes of the Trinity Knot pointing upright is a visual symbol of ascension and brings the concept of duality to a third position of integration and harmony. The peak at top symbolizes higher thought, inspiration, enlightenment, oneness of mind, aspiration, focus, unity consciousness. In this way it helps to focus and center the inner conflicts in order to be in stillness of peace with the wholeness of who you are and within that peace to be guided by your authentic voice.

The Butterfly and Tree of Life merge at center and share the same body from which their energy unfurls into individual beautiful through the growth cycles. This shared body creates a strong foundation that is grounded and focused, yet from this center of groundedness, has the freedom to take flight and flow  – the root wholeness and sum of the individual paths taken along the soul journey.

These symbols felt very empowering in terms of the energy intents to embody – those of enhanced feminine power, sweetness, yet strength, tenderness, awareness, gentleness, clarity of mind, and a time of honesty within self.

raw at the belascoExploring the Belasco and the Cool Synchronicities that Increase My Excitement About Being Part of this Event:

Yesterday was a very full day with a lot of unexpected twists, as I was getting through some things before heading off for a very quick trip to Tucson, AZ this weekend, but no matter how busy, there’s always a chance for some magick. It was also yesterday that we had our scheduled walk-through and space-choosing for the upcoming April 11th event showcase, MARVEL. Appointments got moved around, other things came up needing to get done, and right before I headed to Los Angeles, I received a beautiful birthday gift from an equally beautiful friend of a smokey and druzy quartz pendant in the mail (the celebrations continue) that set the tone for my journey.

raw at the belascoI sent Reiki to my drive, as I always do, and once again made it to LA in record time and actually ended up 1 hour early to the Belasco Theater – the venue for the show, RAW: Los Angeles Presents MARVEL. My intention was to be able to get back earlier, as I had an appointment, and so was the result.

Just as I pulled up I had the feeling to text one of the Production Assistants to see how early they might get there, hoping I wouldn’t have to sit there an hour, and found that she had just pulled in (from Orange County too) at the same early time. I took the street front parking and made my way in.

It is a really fantastic old theater with charm and a very interesting vibe. I was happy to have arrived there early so I could take in the energy on my own. As shares: “A relic of the early 1900s, the Belasco Theater has lay dormant for more than 20 years and is making its grand debut once again. Located on Hill Street in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, the Belasco is now a multi-purpose event and entertainment complex. Its production potential is unrivaled in Southern California, as the venue houses the largest D&B Audiotechnik Sound System in the region as well as a state-of-the art lighting system. From nightlife to special events to fine dining, the modern reimagining of this historic theatre has something to satisfy all tastes and interests.”

raw at the belascoAfter talking with the very sweet and gracious PA, I got the lay of the land and explored on my own. As she went off to take care of things, I was left in the massive theater by myself, which was really cool to just be with the energy and to be able to feel out where best aligned for me in choosing a space for the show. Having had the time with her before had also provided insights to assist and learned about all the cool aspects and artist set-ups for this eclectic show.

After a bit, a few of the other indie artists started to then show up and they took sign ins in order of our arrivals. Apparently, you get to choose a space in order of when you arrive and so I was able to do so first and when I looked (lol, as i just wrote, when I looked, my word count is at 444! – so LOVE it!) anway…when I looked at the map and the area that I was most interested, which is a cool, separate, old-charm, loungey room at the top, I was immediately drawn to the numbers of the spaces in that area. They were in the 40’s and of course I instantly knew #44 it would be. How more perfect of message. (If you haven’t read my recent blog on how much repeating number 4’s show up for me, this is what I’m referring to: Seeing All 4’s)

raw at the belascoI was able to leave directly after since I’d already completed the goals set forth, while others continued to arrive, and left when it was officially supposed to start and made it back home early and with plenty of time for my scheduled appointment. A perfect ending to the day and I was left with a heart full of gratitude once again.

Needless to say, it was just a way of reiterating how much we are part of the creation process of our experiences. While I could have been stressed with the drive or any number of things, I was not, and found my peace within, as well as my empowerment through sending Reiki. I was also filled with excitement and am very much looking forward to this event and being part of such a great group of people and very talented artists. RAW really is a fabulous organization supporting the creative arts to keep thriving and growing. THANK YOU RAW!

Sacred Celtic Mandala Tattoo Design

Celtic MandalaI love observing the shifts that take place and the energy that flows in at any given time. It’s all very telling…always. They seem to come in waves and this especially holds true with the sacred tattoo energy I help co-create. There definitely feels to be an energetic pattern or commonality that aligns.

As shared, there was a big surge of “Africa” energy for a while and a lot of Divine Male clients all at once, then a major shift into Shamanic energy, and now we come into the enchanting Celtic flow.

It’s really fun to be able to travel the eclectic, mystical waters as I dive into where the next co-creative sacred tattoos will take me.

Today’s design I’m sharing is what channeled through as a sort of magickal Celtic Mandala integrating both a sacred geometry and organic energy together. The symbols that came through for it (mirroring of my client) were the Spiral, Triple Spiral, Triangle, Circle, Daffodil, and Dragonfly. This piece was intuited for my client’s left inner forearm, at the widest area just under the vein where you give blood.

A little about the symbolism in it, as I know everyone likes to see what all is possible to bring into sacred tattoo designs:

The Triple Spiral represents drawing in the three powers of the Maiden, Mother, and Crone and is a sign of feminine power and empowerment through transition and growth. It’s called the Threefold in this case when that center triangular shape with hole is present, representing the hub and signifying unity of the three power.

The Spiral, which I added to the Triple Spiral arms and inside of the Dragonfly represents ethereal energy radiating both outward and inward and symbolizes growth, birth and expansion consciousness, as well as the continuous cycles of life.

Both the Circle and Triangle commonly symbolize clarity. The Circle symbolizing also your self-awareness within the construct of the universe and cosmic consciousness and of course, eternity. The Triangle pointing upright is a visual symbol of ascension and brings the concept of duality to a third position of integration and harmony. The peak at top symbolizes higher thought, inspiration, enlightenment, oneness of mind, aspiration, focus, unity consciousness. In this way it helps you focus and center the inner conflicts in order to be in stillness of peace with the wholeness of who you are and within that peace to be guided by your authentic voice.

My client resonates with wild flowers, like me, and Daffodils immediately struck me. The daffodil has beautiful symbolism that felt very balancing for this piece. Daffodils are symbols of rebirth, new beginnings (as they are connected to March and the Spring Equinox that heralds a new season), good fortune and luck (you never want to have or give just one as it is said this will not bring good fortune, but more than one is fortuitous – I added three in the design to keep with the energy), ray of hope and light ahead, assists in reminding you to be in your heart and not let ego lead you, purity, the sun always shining down upon you, and joy. The flowers I felt to make more organic, to balance the more abstract qualities to bring in that energy of sensitivity, sweetness, tenderness, and gentleness, as well as connection to the Earth Mother and Nature.

The Number 3 generally symbolizes creative power, growth, magic, intuition, expression, versatility, pure joy of creativity, celebration, very goddess energy connected and reflective of the Empress in the Tarot, overcoming duality, manifestation, integration, complete cycles, flow.

The Dragonfly symbolizes also prosperity, good luck, strength, peace, harmony, purity, but also change, change of perspective, going beyond the surface to the deeper meanings of life, power, poise, maturity, elegance, grace, defeat of self-created illusions, clear vision into the realities of life, discovery of your own abilities and your true self, removal of doubts, self-discovery, removal of inhibitions, living in the moment, living to the fullest, and ability to see beyond human limitations. I created the Dragonfly as a mixture of magickal and organic to be that energy of Divinity within the Human Temple Body where physical and spiritual meet, and created it in a more flowy quality to bring in that femininity and natural elegance.

I integrated all of them to create a very potent and focused energy that also had room to flow and grow in an organic nature – balancing right and left brain and bringing a wisdom and alchemy of how to work in that middle space that knows how and when to use each part in the attainment of the whole. While the Mandala itself was lovely, I felt that combining a magickal dragonfly flying toward it would signify the continuous journey of evolution and to work towards consistence presence and mindfulness in your conscious awareness and choices. There is also a sense of drawing energy inward and outward at the same time within the Mandala, and a blossoming energy, along with a bit of alchemical mysticism.

This all felt to be perfectly mirroring of the essence my client had expressed and that came through for where she is at, what she is celebrating, and what she is moving into and intending to create.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s journey, as we continue with the Celtic flow.

Love is the Bridge – Quotes to Inspire Living From the Heart & My Own Emerald Bridge Journey

My photo capture titled “Emerald Bridge” – Zion National Park, Utah

Every time I work on a bunch of new editing preparations for my website, (which will be up shortly) it is an opportunity for me to mindfully review my life path and service focuses and to make sure that everything is consistent with the integrity of my heart and the messages I want to put out to the collective.

While I was getting things together for my web designer, David Tarin, yesterday, to update from all the shifts and new things evolving, I was immersed in breathing in the meaning behind my choice of company names again (which I see more as an energetic entity conveying a symbolic message), and how it helps to reiterate the journey I resonate with walking.

For anyone who doesn’t know, my company name is Emerald Bridge, which was divinely inspired as a reflection of the Heart Chakra. The Heart Chakra is the source of powerful, creative and unconditional love energy that acts an an energetic “bridge” and balancing integrator between opposites: body and spirit, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity, lower and upper chakras. It is symbolized by a lotus of twelve petals and the color green, with emerald as one of its associated gemstones that match its frequency. It is from this place of peaceful centeredness that love emanates as Divine power.

And so Emerald Bridge (a compassionately conscious business) was born as a merging of body and spirit through the heart with visionary healing arts services that would help spread unconditional love across the globe. It’s been my hope to inspire a return to natural harmony within and without and to help cultivate authentic self-expression, bring people together in joyful co-creation, and support a remembrance and embrace of your own Divinity.

When I was visiting Zion National Park in Utah just a few weeks ago, I was mesmerized by the visions I saw that enchanted my heart. We took a trail that led to the “Emerald Pools,” as they are called, and they were just that – a lovely emerald green shade, as was the river that flowed along the banks, which you can see in the image I shared. We had to traverse a bridge over the beautiful green, flowing water and on this approaching-snow-fall-day, everything surrounding us had this stunning green shade to it – from delicate and mystical, to enlivening and vibrant emerald shades. It was so magickal and instantly, as I looked at the view you see captured in the photo, I said, this is such a perfect reflection of the essence of Emerald Bridge to me.

Every moment is an opportunity to live from the heart and by my choosing a company name that reflects this, I have once again created my life as a symbolic expression of what’s most meaningful to me to be mindful of embodying at every step of the journey.

Some quotes to inspire your own heart-embracing:

Go to the truth beyond the mind. Love is the bridge. ~Stephen Levine

The physical heart is our strongest muscle; it also functions as the core of our feeling dimension.  Like any muscle, the heart grows stronger with use.  By creating a feeling connection between our heart and our voice, thought, touch, sight and hearing, we instantly access the safest, most accessible method for opening the heart.  We create this feeling connection by allowing awareness to penetrate the heart.  The moment this connection occurs we contact the love of our Higher Self; we transcend fear, sorrow, and anger; and we heal ourselves and others. ~Dan Millman

The Way is not in the sky.  The way is in the heart. ~Buddha

Culture of the mind must be subservient to the heart. ~Mahatma Gandhi

I stand before what is with an open heart. And with an open heart I dwell in possibility. ~Macrina Wiederkehr

In our deepest moments of struggle, frustration, fear, and confusion, we are being called upon to reach in and touch our hearts. Then, we will know what to do, what to say, how to be.  What is right is always in our deepest heart of hearts.  It is from the deepest part of our hearts that we are capable of reaching out and touching another human being.  It is, after all, one heart touching another heart. ~Roberta Sage Hamilton

The heart is the place where we live our passions.  It is frail and easily broken, but wonderfully resilient.  There is no point in trying to deceive the heart.  It depends upon our honesty for its survival. ~Leo Buscaglia

To give pleasure to a single heart by a single act is better than a thousand heads bowing in prayer. ~Mahatma Gandhi

There is also a self-contained guru principle that operates within each individual.  In his book Healing Mantras, Thomas Ashley-Farrand writes, “The true guru is not some person to whom you give complete and slavish obedience. The true guru is a principle that resides in your own heart.  …  In Sanskrit, this guru principle is called the upaguru, or “teacher without form.'” So in the ultimate sense you can serve as your own guru, the finder of light and truth in your own heart. ~Donald Altman

If we unfold and develop our potential, we open ourselves up to an incredible higher order of being.  But if we continue to deny the real intelligence manifested through the heart and rely only on our intellect, evolution will fail in its task. ~Joseph Chilton Pearce

The power of love to change bodies is legendary, built into folklore, common sense, and everyday experience.  Love moves the flesh, it pushes matter around … Throughout history, “tender loving care” has uniformly been recognized as a valuable element in healing. ~Larry Dossey

When speech comes from a quiet heart, it has the strength of the orchid, and the fragrance of rock. ~Stephen Mitchell

This is my simple religion.  There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy.  Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness. ~Dalai Lama

Imagine your heart as an opening lotus.  From its center comes a crimson child, Pure, virginal, and innocent.  One meditation gives this instruction: Imagine your heart opening into a red lotus.  From its center comes a crimson child.  Bring this child out of your body and imagine him or her floating above your head. You, as a child, are holding a sun in each hand while each foot stands on a moon.  Hold this image as long as you can. It is hard to bring out this child. When you try, you realize how many defenses you have built around yourself. You also realize how the experiences of adolescence and adulthood have stained you. Sometimes, you may even doubt that you have a pure and innocent self to bring out anymore. But each of us does. Each of us must find that crimson child within us and bring him or her out. For this child represents the time when our energies were whole and our hearts were untroubled by the duplicity of the world and ourselves. ~Deng Ming-Dao

In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart. ~Mahatma Gandhi

According to most of the great Eastern spiritual traditions, our inner awareness/energy, or consciousness, is actually a limited, contracted form of the great Awareness/energy that underlies, creates, and sustains all things.  The Upanishads call it Brahman, the Vastness.  The sages of Kashmir Shaivism call it Chiti (Universal Consciousness), Paramashiva (Supreme Auspiciousness), Parama Chaitanya (supreme Consciousness), or Paramatma (supereme Self).  The great Shaivite philospher Abhinavagupta called itHridaya, the Heart.  In Buddhism it is called the Dharmakaya, the “body” of Truth. ~Sally Kempton

The Green Chakra (heart) registers impulses of the higher mind (subjective, abstract) and also higher emotions, such as compassion and sympathy. ~The Power of the Rays by S.G.J. Ouseley

The Shiva Samhita thus describes the benefits which are said to accrue to the yogi from meditation upon the heart center: He gets immeasurable knowledge, knows the past, present and future; has clairaudience, clairvoyance and can walk in the air, whenever he likes. He sees the adepts and the goddesses known as Yoginis … It is not necessary to comment upon the poetic descriptions of the various powers; the student will read between the lines. Still, there may also be something in the literal meaning of such statements as these; for there are many wonders in India – the mysterious powers of the fire-walkers, and the perfectly marvelous hypnotic ability shown by some conjurers who perform the famous rope trick and similar feats. ~Shiva Samhita from The Chakras

This morning, as I stood perched on the edge of the cliff where I often stand to survey the river with hands cupped around pumpkin spice coffee, I felt an overwhelming sense of freedom and joy swirl all around me until it settled in my heart.  I gave thanks for the day – for all blessings received, and proceeded to do my river meditations, holding up in prayer those who most need it at this time. There are so many!   I closed the door to one era in my life – and opened the door to another because I was willing to heed and respond to the message urging me to “dwell in your heart.” This message was not just meant for me – but it is meant for many others as well.   I embraced the sense of stillness that the river was embodying more deeply this morning because I truly listened and responded to the inner prompting to dwell in my heart. It was the key to my own transitus.  May you listen today. May you embody stillness. May you dwell in your heart. ~Olga Rasmussen

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. ~Helen Keller

Open your heart – open it wide; someone is standing outside. ~Quoted in Believe: A Christmas Treasury by Mary Engelbreit

The Power of Sacred Silence – A Way to Connect with Greater Depth of Your Heart

Me in Bimini

Photo taken of me by Allison in Bimini at the beach on 12/21/12. We remarked how my hair in the wind made my silhouette look like a sitting Buddha

I’ve found myself increasingly being in silence and craving it more and more. This has led to more time spent in nature as well. And when not outdoors, I work in silence all day these days and even sometimes when I paint my soul has preferred to listen to the music of my universal heart instead. I’ve always been one to listen silently and not talk a lot when around people, unless of course I’m teaching a class.

Silence has an energy to it that is like no other source and it is from this stillness that you find everything you will ever need and all that you forgot you knew.

It’s important to go out of your way to cultivate silence in this modern world where it practically ceases to exist, as it is invaluable. When you create even 5 minutes of silence each day, it will change your experience and you will become aware of just how much the external stimuli is affecting you.  All of this external noise creates internal noise, as our minds become more restless and active. Silence and inner stillness will lead to an experience of wholeness and happiness that comes from experiencing the divine inside you and conversely, also the divine inside everything and everyone else.

Silence is something that not only do I find balancing and recharging, as well as supportive to being more present, mindful, and aware of all the energetic subtleties and guiding messages, but I also find it a way in which I can go deeper into the watery abyss of my authenticity, hear my intuition, and exercise expansion of my heart.

I’m constantly in awe and in love with the limitless depths of the heart. We’ve come to understand the importance of exercising the body, but it is also important to continually exercise the heart in taking it to new levels that will access its expansive potentials to heal all and to create anything we dream.

Silence speaks volumes and is a way we can speak heart to heart and allow love’s stillness to envelope our souls.

Today my dear friend, Jenny Yemaya, (who is also the owner of The ARC and was my co-host in Bimini for our last retreat there in December, as well as for the upcoming June retreat) posted a video of a deeply moving “moment of silence” between two artists (Abramovic and Ulay) who shared an intense love and transformational, artistic working relationship between 1976 and 1988, parting with a spiritual journey that would end their relationship.

Each of them walked the Great Wall of China, starting from the two opposite ends and meeting in the middle. As Abramović described it: “That walk became a complete personal drama. Ulay started from the Gobi Desert and I from the Yellow Sea. After each of us walked 2500 km, we met in the middle and said good-bye.”

She later described the process: “We needed a certain form of ending, after this huge distance walking towards each other. It is very human. It is in a way more dramatic, more like a film ending … Because in the end you are really alone, whatever you do.”

The video below is from Marina Abramovic’s 2010 MoMa show where she shared a minute of silence with each stranger who sat in front of her. Ulay arrived without her knowing (after all of these years of separation) and this is what happened.

This is one of those moments that touches you in the deepest of places. The power of sacred silence in speaking volumes. No words, but the effects are still with me as the tone for this day ♥ I found myself in a deeper journey of the heart and in loving tears most of this morning due to this video and what it touched inside of me. I am grateful for these moments that exercise my heart and draw me deeper into the stillness within.

Below the video I have shared quotes on this theme of silence.

May you be inspired to embrace the power of sacred silence and the heart.

(For an addition to Abramovic and Ulay’s story, I’ve added a snippet below as well that Jenny also shared, to give you some background on them)

Let us be silent, that we may hear the whispers of the gods. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Let me silent be,
For silence is the speech of love,
The music of the spheres above.
~Richard Henry Stoddard

Silence is more musical than any song. ~Christina Rossetti

Learn to get in touch with the silence within yourself and know that everything in this life has a purpose. ~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

In the attitude of silence the soul finds the path in a clearer light, and what is elusive and deceptive resolves itself into crystal clearness. Our life is a long and arduous quest after Truth. ~Mahatma Gandhi

We listen too much to the telephone and we listen too little to nature. The wind is one of my sounds. A lonely sound, perhaps, but soothing. Everybody should have his personal sounds to listen for—sounds that will make him exhilarated and alive, or quiet and calm… As a matter of fact, one of the greatest sounds of them all—and to me it is a sound—is utter, complete silence. ~André Kostelanetz

Silence is a source of great strength. ~Lao Tzu

True silence is the rest of the mind; it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment. ~William Penn

He who does not understand your silence will probably not understand your words. ~Elbert Hubbard

Silence allows you to watch your mind and become aware of the thoughts that you may be acting on unconsciously. When you see the thoughts, you can make a conscious choice to act on the thought or change your mind, instead of going along with the noise. I have seen people who don’t want to look at themselves keep going until something happens that makes them stop — a sickness or an accident — but it gives them that reflective, quiet space where they can face what is difficult in their mind. We each have a unique purpose to fulfill in this life and inklings can come in those quiet moments. ~Swami Radhananda

Let go into the clear light, trust it, merge with it, and enter the Silence, your true home. The more light you allow within you, the brighter the world you live in will be. ~

A little more about Marina and Ulay:

In 1976, after moving to Amsterdam, Abramović met the West German performance artist Uwe Laysiepen, who went by the single name Ulay.

When Abramović and Ulay began their collaboration, the main concepts they explored were the ego and artistic identity. This was the beginning of a decade of influential collaborative work. Each performer was interested in the traditions of their cultural heritages and the individual’s desire for ritual. Consequently, they decided to form a collective being called “the other”, and spoke of themselves as parts of a “two-headed body”. They dressed and behaved like twins, and created a relationship of complete trust. As they defined this phantom identity, their individual identities became less accessible. In an analysis of phantom artistic identities, Charles Green has noted that this allowed a deeper understanding of the artist as performer, for it revealed a way of “having the artistic self made available for self-scrutiny.”

While some critics have explored the idea of a hermaphroditic state of being as a feminist statement, Abramović herself denies considering this as a conscious concept. Her body studies, she insists, have always been concerned primarily with the body as the unit of an individual, a tendency she traces to her parents’ military pasts. Rather than concern themselves with gender ideologies, Abramović/Ulay explored extreme states of consciousness and their relationship to architectural space. They devised a series of works in which their bodies created additional spaces for audience interaction. In “Relation in Space” (1976) they ran around the room – two bodies like two planets, mixing male and female energy into a third component called “that self.” “Relation in Movement” had the pair drive their car inside of a museum for 365 laps; a black liquid oozed from the car, forming a kind of sculpture, each lap representing a year. (After 365 laps they entered the New Millennium.)

In discussing this phase of her performance history, Abramović has said: “The main problem in this relationship was what to do with the two artists’ egos. I had to find out how to put my ego down, as did he, to create something like a hermaphroditic state of being that we called the death self.”

To create Breathing In/Breathing Out the two artists devised a piece in which they connected their mouths and took in each other’s exhaled breaths until they had used up all of the available oxygen. Seventeen minutes after the beginning of the performance they both fell to the floor unconscious, their lungs having filled with carbon dioxide. This personal piece explored the idea of an individual’s ability to absorb the life of another person, exchanging and destroying it.

In Imponderabilia (1977, reenacted in 2010) two performers, both completely nude, stand in a doorway. The public must squeeze between them in order to pass, and in doing so choose which one of them to face.

In 1988, after several years of tense relations, Abramović and Ulay decided to make a spiritual journey which would end their relationship.

Abramović conceived this walk in a dream, and it provided what she thought was an appropriate, romantic ending to a relationship full of mysticism, energy and attraction. She later described the process: “We needed a certain form of ending, after this huge distance walking towards each other. It is very human. It is in a way more dramatic, more like a film ending … Because in the end you are really alone, whatever you do.”

Abramović reported that during her walk she was reinterpreting her connection to the physical world and to nature. She felt that the metals in the ground influenced her mood and state of being; she also pondered the Chinese myths in which the great wall has been described as a “dragon of energy.”
