Starfish Symbolism – Exploring the Magick of these “Star People”
Every day of the weekend I get out in nature hiking in the mountains or hills and walking on the beach to be in the elements I love so much and to recharge. Each time is always a beautiful and invigorating experience, but yesterday had to be one of, if not the most magickal beach days yet.
The tide was out unusually farther than it has been in ages (according to the wildlife naturalist that strolls the beaches to educate, as this beach is protected as an underwater haven), which revealed a rare sighting of so many Starfish in one place in the wild that I have ever seen – had to be like a 100 or more! These particular ones we saw are “Ochre Stars” and range from orange to purple and every variation in between.
These stunning beings brought out the little girl in me that was in awe at each discovery, and exploring in wonder of these miracles and beauty all around. I was skipping, giggling, eyes popping out in welcome surprise…I was simply, SO happy inside. Intuitively this felt to be a sign of abundant inspiration, miracles, and rebirthing, but I also kept saying and thinking to myself – “Wow! Look at all these ethereal Star People I’m so blessed to be in the presence of that have decided to reveal themselves on this rare day.” – yes they actually ARE connected to all of these symbolisms, including our Cosmic family.
And as the artist I am, I love to photograph what I’m seeing through my heart and eyes, in order to bring the beauty and profoundness of life to others.
Starfish have always been one of my top five favorite ocean beings. Their symbolism is so magickal and beautifully powerful to me and in my life. So to see SO many all at once yesterday, and at this particular time, was a true gift reminiscent of the abundant stars in the sky they are mirroring.
A couple of the photos I took came out with spectacular captures of rainbow lighting that were surrounding these amazing Starfish. It really helped demonstrate the pure and magickal energy that was abound and what I was experiencing in the joy of this gifted encounter.
Because this was such a profoundly moving experience for me, I felt guided to post the photos and express a bit about the powerful symbolism of Starfish to share the magick with you.
The Starfish is a universal and celestial symbol of infinite divine love. It has been used to represent the Virgin Mary – or Stella Maris, which means Star of the Sea – an ancient title she goes by because she is believed to lovingly intercede as a guide and protector of those who travel over troubled waters or seek their livelihoods on the sea. For this reason she is also seen as an emblem of salvation during trying times, which the Starfish reflects in this mirroring symbolism. In addition to love, the Starfish also emanates the energies of inspiration, guidance, brilliance, intuition, and vigilance, with its connection to the stars.
In Egyptian mythology, the Starfish is one of the many titles of the Goddess Isis – a name by which tempest-tossed sailors adored and honored her as. It is thought that the attributes of a marine deity may have been bestowed on Isis by sea-faring Greeks of Alexandria and that this assumption is then thought to point to Sirius, the bright star of Isis, being the Stella Maris.
There is no coincidence, I feel, in this shared name by Isis and Mary since there are many similarities between them leading to a connection. In either and both cases, the Starfish comes to symbolize the same attributes that they convey and I found this very fitting to my personal connection with both.
The Starfish is considered a keystone species that affects many other organisms in an ecosystem and plays a critical role in maintaining the structure of an ecological community.
The Starfish is also a symbol of healing and regeneration due to its amazing ability to regenerate an arm and an entirely new Starfish. They are able to simply drop an arm and scurry away to safety at will in order to outsmart predators. Because quite a few of the vital organs are housed in Starfish arms this enables the possibility to grow an entire new Starfish from an arm and part of the central disc, if ripped off it.
So, it is thought if you see a Starfish in your dreams, this may suggest a period of healing and regeneration, as well as could indicate that you have many options to weigh and decisions to make.
Starfish wisdom includes a connection to the Star People :), regeneration, Moon magick, beauty, and tidal movement. They are a way for us to realize our potentials, promises of dreams, ways to connect with the mystical, and to flow with the waters of life in trust. For me, it was all of this and a warm communing with my Cosmic family that gave me great joy.
I was drawn to one smooth stone on the beach this special day that reminded me of a moonstone, of the hidden miracles of life, and the sparkling stars in the Cosmos because of the way it sparkles with shimmer and pixie dust at just the right angles and is pearl in color. A beautiful gift of the sea and my friends, as a reminder of this day and the energy I know is there around me to call on and tap into when needed.
I felt an overwhelming joyful presence that still carries with me today from this experience and am feeling that depth of connection continuing to journey further.
Everything around you is a miracle waiting to be discovered. You are always surrounded by support, love, and the ability to create anew. I hope you each find time in your life to take pause of the beautiful messages and presences around you. To listen when your intuition, heart and body take you on a journey outside of your normal routine, to honor the brilliance and magnificence of every Earthly and Cosmic gift, and to be in the joy of All That Is.
I love this poem by e. e. cummings that my dear friend Jenny Yemaya shared with me yesterday. It perfectly mirrors this day and the last line is so true!
maggie and milly and molly and may by e. e. cummings
maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)
and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and
milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;
and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles: and
may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
it’s always ourselves we find in the sea

Absolutely beautiful thank you. I’ve just recently gone through a sort of spiritual rebirth, releasing past patterns and connecting to my own divine feminine goddess and just a few days later, walked past a beautiful starfish necklace that I just knew I had to buy. I wondered about its meaning and now I know. Thank you x

I felt called to repost this January post of Tania Marie’s in context of some other “magickal” things I’ve noticed lately. First of all, people around the country have discovered the phenomenon of “chemically nucleated snow,” which burns, turns black and smells like plastic or other chemicals. I experimented on our snow, and it melted without chemical odor, but later learned from people in Ohio, Northern Indiana and Michigan that THEIR snow turned black and stunk of chemicals!
One difference? I’ve got orgone pucks around our property, and I work daily with Nature Spirits, elementals, Runes and the Faery Realm to protect and filter our property. Then, yesterday, I felt led to repost my own earlier dream about an infinity sign of bees. A magickal, Faery Realm working beekeeper shared that HER and a neighbors’ bees are gathering nectar from some mysterious winter source. Despite the extreme cold, the queens are laying — in preparation for something. This comment preceded my stumbling upon an article about colony collapse disorder and EMF’s and pesticides killing the bees. Both of these unusual experiences reminded me of my dear friend, Tania, another one who loves the Earth and works daily with crystals, Nature Spirits and the Faery Realm. Tania lives in Southern California, where we hear so many reports of “melting starfish” from Fukushima radiation or some other unknown cause. Yet, Tania walks along the beaches and finds gorgeous, living starfish. Today, Drunvalo Melchizedek released a video about removing radiation by intention. My point in sharing these details is that negative, toxic, poisonous things can and do shift when we get in touch with larger allies, energy and power. As the Hopi say, “We are the ones we have been waiting for!” Please, find ways to empower and heal your little corner of heaven on Earth. Blessed Be!
Your photos are beautiful and the stories are inspiring (: . I found your blog by searching google for the starfish meaning because my closest friend gave me a starfish necklace as a gift for my 16th birthday. It was absolutely the perfect gift because of the story that he wrote in the card along with it. Sad thing is, he stopped talking to me a few weeks ago and wouldn’t say why. I was confused and hurt beyond words, but today I looked over on my dresser and saw the necklace hanging in my jewelry box. I put it on and I’ve been wearing it all day just remembering that the starfish can regrow a new arm if it’s been cut off. I guess my friend to me was a vital part of my life and I felt like my arm had been cut off, but slowly over time I’m sure he’ll grow back and come back to me.
thank you so much lauren! i really appreciate you sharing your story of your starfish necklace (i have one too) and how you found hope in the symbolism. much love to you xoox
I just found my way to this post! Feeling so much joy and gladdened by the rainbow starlight connection and visitation. 😀
aw yay!! how wonderful!! so glad you enjoyed the magickal journey ❤
You have a beautiful inner child, Tania. She is so full on wonder and joy.
I saw this species of starfish while in Oregon last summer, and felt equally filled with delight. So beautiful…and with the anemones, muscles, rocks, sand and glistening water – a true work of art to behold. And me without my camera!
thank you sweet mary! wonderful you’ve been able to experience these magickal starfish beings too! as artists of life, it’s hard not to see the beauty in every little thing 😉
Hey, you know that picture you took of the giant dandelion seed head? How did you get all the purple and blue? We have those and I photograph them all the time, against different colored things, like the sky, and they are always white. I love the colors you got! We have big dandelions, but the giant ones we have are from this yellow flower that looks like a star.
Maybe it was just the faeries hanging out with you.
hehe…i just saw your other comment too. so i see you found it. 😉 not sure how the purple and blue came through so beautifully..i think there may have been some violet flowers in the background if i remember correctly and somehow they took on more of the hue i guess, as well. magick? 😉
It really is a magical picture. Just beautiful.
thank you!
